The Sumerians were the first civilization in Mesopotamia. Many cities such as Uruk, Ur, Nippur, Lagash and Kish had their own leader, very much like a king however they were usually the high priest of that city as well. Sumer stood from 3500 BC but was crumbled by the neighbouring Akkadians in around 2330 BC.

They were established when the neighbouring Sumerian city –Uruk attacked Akkad and failed. Soon the Akkadian King, Sargon the Great destroyed the Sumerian Empire and united Northern and Southern Mesopotamia into one nation. This Empire lasted around 250 years conquering all parts of Mesopotamia and beyond. The civilization ended when attacked by the mysterious Amorites in around 2100 BC.
